Diary Entry Week 10/10/16 to 14/10/16 Radio Production

Monday 10th October -

Today we all went to a class trip to a radio company called Gaydio (http://nw.gaydio.co.uk/ ) in manchester. when we arrived we were introduced to some of the team that work there as well as John Ryan who is one of the men in charge of Gaydio. We all went with John to one of the recording studios where some of Gaydio is recorded, this was an interesting experience because we got to see the way a radio studio looks as well as some of the technology used. He began to tell us his experiences in the world of radio and how he got to his position today through managing small shows in hospitals to going to other countries to help their radio stations. John then began to show us the equipment that they used in their everyday radio show, one of there was the ability through software to pre-record audio for example intros or even whole radio shows so that more time can be utilised during those shows. He explained that he although the technology has helped him he has been in radio for the majority of his life and that each place has been different, from being very enjoyable to awful he still enjoys what he does and will continue to. This showed me that every radio station works differently and when you work in radio everyone will have different stories and experience different was to work in radio.

Tuesday 11th October -

Today we listened and deconstructed past radio shows from other HND students to get a better understanding of what we will be doing in the next few weeks. This helped a lot in seeing what sorts of routes theses groups took as well as the ideas they chose to use for their production. The reason the was helpful was because you can observe where these students made their mistakes and use this information to perfect your own project. After listening to the past radio projects we gave them grades to see if we could recognise the positive and negatives of each one and how we can use so of there to perfect our ideas. After we listened to those we then began to listen to a radio 4  broadcast (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b045z8wn?ns_mchannel=social&) that was a story based on true events. This helped us out even more with our ideas as t showed us that our projects didn't have to be the conventional radio shows and could be something very meaningful and unique to give your project more depth and emotion.

When working in the industry you need to be able to analyse specific parts of radio production and to be able to identify the certain conventions and who it appeals to. Listening to other radio productions gives you an outside look on what you have to achieve when creating a high production radio show. I listened to a BBC radio drama called ''The Light of a Thousand Suns'' (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xyZyPrG3s3c) so that I could get an example of what I would be trying to make. one of the first things i notice is the why the characters speak, they all sound very middle to upper class in their accents and the words they used, this adds a level realism because to higher level officers in the drama have a more sophisticated way of speaking and tone. This helped me because it showed me an example that accents and speech have to be varied depending on their character. Music is also a very important part in creating an atmosphere to the scene it is added to and makes it have more going on in there scene as to make it less boring and to fill it out so it isnt just speech. Listening to this radio drama was a big help in getting my ideas ready and realising the main things i needed to focus on.
