Unit 24 - writing for television and radio - Part 2

On this assignment, i will be discussing and finding helpful material to use and expand my knowledge in script writing and to get a better understanding of how scripts are used and laid out. this will help me expand my knowledge and how to write my script which will involve parts of this genre of fantasy and action.

Genre - Fantasy / Biblical / Action

Legion - Feature film /www.imsdb.com/

Game of Thrones (Hardhome) -  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCiSrqXpx84

The first script I will be discussing is the Game of Thrones season 5 finale "Mothers Mercy" which was a very important episode for Game of Thrones fans as some very important events occurred. The terminology used in the script are words used to describe what is going on in the scene, for example, the first line from the script " INT.STANNIS'S CAMP - MELISANDRE'S TENT" which is the terminology to show to the actors what the scene in tales to establish the scene and the narrative. after this, there is a sentence to describe what the actor has to do without dialog "Melisandre looks at the icicles hanging outside her tent and sees that they are melting" this is written in the script to show where the characters need to look so that the scene makes sense to the directer . the reasons I have chosen this example is because Game of Thrones is a very action based fantasy which also has the idea that an evil I soon coming to destroy the world in which they live on, this can also relate to the film Legion which is a fantasy / action which is set during the Christian biblical armageddon. they relate to each other with the there sense of action and danger in there world and the film/ tv show.

Elements that can be used from the film Legion is the biblical characters such as Archangel Gabriel and Michael who are very biblical and powerful beings within the film and mythology which my story is based on, there is also the apocalyptic events that happen in Legion and Game of thrones. The story of legion involves the biblical armageddon where the angels descend to punish humanity by order of God himself . My story follows a similar path but not involving the battle that will happen during Armageddon, unlike Legion. Locations within the scripts are different from the ones shown in my script, the battle that occurs in Game of Thrones during the battle for Winterfell will be the sorts of battles that will occur in my story and will show the sort of unfairness of battle when even when your relatively good you can still loose.

Factual Information -

For all scripts, factual information is very important if you are writing something set in the real world or is inspired my things connected to the real world. For my script, it must be accurate to the book of revelation and the Christian armageddon to not offend by the writing and the representation of there religion. Religion is a subject that some people keep close to there hearts and are very serious about such subjects. one of such  examples of inaccurate events is the film Pearl Harbour which underwhelmed Pearl Harbour historians because of its extravagations on the counter attacks that US fighter pilots engaged in and that the main characters where used to bomb Tokyo. I feel that accuracy is the first thing you should factor in when writing a script as it can effect the over all feedback and the general idea that you are trying to portray

Opinions -

Opinions are a big part of script writing and are needed to perfect your image of the script you are writing. when writing a script is very important to take in opinions and criticism as your idea could be in need of improvement or your idea will not work for whatever reason is specified. film critics are the people who get the opinions on your film to the general public to inform the population before they pay to view your film whoever it is worth your viewership and your money. This can effect the overall income of the film and how well it will do in the box-office, this is why you should always take in criticism when writing the original script  so that you can avoid failure when critics review your finished film. Batman v Superman is also a great example of how opinions can differ from film critics and the audience as the critics panned the film but the audience rating is a lot higher that the critics rating

Speculation -

When it comes to speculation more famous writers are more anticipated that there writing will be good and very well written for example when Steven Spielberg is involved in writing a film that film will immediately get attention from the media because he is a world know writer that has made films such as Jurassic park and E.T. Hype in the film industry can reach very high levels but then the film could not be as good as the speculation made it out to be, this can be shown for Captain America: Civil War where the hype and speculation for this film where very high but the film turned out to be-be a very average and boring film that did not live up to the speculation surrounding the film. This can damage the film's writers as it will tell people going to view these films that sometimes your writing can fail or that you yourself are a bad writer which majority of the time isn't true. Speculation can also have a positive effect on writers because if your writing lives up to the hype it can show off your abilities to be a writer and will make your future films have more credibility

Existing Material from Other Broadcast and Written Media for Conversation or Adaptation -

One of the big inspirations and existing materials that I have used to develop my idea is the plot from the ''Diablo'' series of games as well as the animation 'Wrath'' that revolves around the sorts of ideas that I want to portray in my story and have used that loosely to help with the ideas that I wish to make in my script, better know and existing material is a film named Legion that shows the sort of action and loose play I wish to adapt for my script. using existing material from other places is needed to help you piece together your vision into a cognitive and linear plot. This research that I have used has helped me create the settings and the characters that will be involved as the Christian bible is a big help in creating these places and names that I will be using in my script.

Primary research is the best research to use to gather very accurate and reliable data to make sure that you have a very wide opinion on the product you are making. I have asked people to me if they would be interested in my idea of a loosely biblical action story and I have has positive feedback about the genre and the idea itself. The way I found the feedback from people was a survey I conducted that showed what people thought about biblical and action movies. The first question in my survey was '' Do you enjoy watching action movies ?'' I received 7 responses 2 selected No and 5 Selected yes so with these results this shows that action movies are for the majority enjoyed by people. The second question I asked was ''Would you enjoy and action movie if combined with a biblical story ?'' with the 7 responses I received 5 said yes and 2 said no, this was surprising to me as it was the same outcome as before. This told me that the majority of people will enjoy the genre that I want to use for my film. I then asked how do you feel about this idea and I got mostly positive feedback one of these responses where '' I feel that this idea can work but it needs to be accurate to avoid offending anyone and it needs to also be entertaining and easy to understand for people that do not know the source material'' a negative response I got was '' This idea will in my opinion not work, religion has never been about action and because of this the themes I feel are offensive and can not be shown in the way you want it to be'' this tells me that there will be people that will be offended by my film, but my film is fiction and is only loosely based on the stories and characters from the bible and therefore should not cause problems for the majority of people who are interested in my film. This helped me go forward in my idea and to work upon that to improve it based on the feedback I got back. The popularity of such stories like diablo and other biblical tales like the bible itself which is used in every country on earth is a very well know but and the information within those books are although are sometimes controversial are shown to be very profitable and popular to the public.

Bias and Reliability - the survey i conducted was answered by an unknown source of people so it has no bias towards the information as it is random peoples opinions about the genre i wish to show but it is not very reliable. because this survey was random peoples opinions and because of this the information is not a serious source of information as well as the amount of response where very small meaning i did not get an amount that can give me a more accurate and varied response, if i used a larger pool of people for this survey would be more accurate and would be more reliable.

Secondary research is not a very useful tool to use in gathering as it can be very inaccurate and has no real protection to make sure the truth to the information you have looked for. I have not done much secondary research because of this reason. The secondary research that I have conducted are how well films such as Legion did when they were released as their budget was $26,000,000 and brought in $40,168,080  which isn't a failure and did make a profit based on the premise of it being a very toned down action film but was popular with the basis of its inspiration. using this research from IMDB helped me decide to continue and I can make sure that this information is correct as IMDB is a very credible website that has accurate information. Another example of my film is the 2016 film Gods of Egypt which is a film about the Egyptian gods fighting for dominance over Egypt. This combines the two genres that I want to use for my film such as action, biblical and fantasy to create a very interesting and fun tale to enjoy watching. Gods of Egypt managed to get over their estimated budget which was 14,123,903 dollars and received  132,706,566 dollars worldwide by the 29th of march meaning that this genre was successful and as this amount of money shows the audience wanted to see this movie.

Bias and Reliability - IMDB as always been the number 1 place people go to check out films and the information they show to the population. The information about the films they show such as the facts about the film and there budget and earnings are accurate and reliable but  its rating system is bias towards films although it is user based films are often review by a much bigger western population meaning eastern film and less popular films will get worse reviews because of the more wester population of IMDB .This means that IMDB is bias when it comes to reviews and ratings but is very acurate when it comes to facts and information about the movies on the site

Evaluation -

The research that I conducted was very useful in the progression of my idea and to work upon that idea. to conclude on the work that I have written about i feel that i have learnt how to use the things listed in the assignment to produce my idea for my script and how to gather the information to reinforce my decision to go with the ideas that I have created but also adapted from other sources such as the bible and other places that I have shown in most of this assignment.

when i was looking for scripts i chosen the two productions (Game of Thrones and Legion) to get an idea of my scripts a written and how they a written in the genre I am using for my story as they are both fantasy action which I have concluded is very popular in pop culture such as game of thrones and Lord of the Rings have done very well in profits and popularity and this is an example of how these types of genre such as fantasy and action.

In conclusion i have researched a lot of information to show how and why I have chosen this idea and the implications of doing such an idea as this in the ways of factual inaccuracies that need to be taken into effect and how this can cause controversy to how opinions can give you lots of information on how to change your ideas if needed and to get feedback on your ideas.
