music video analysis

Take me to church - Hozier

Music Video - Take me to church
Meaning of the song

Genre - The genre for this music video is a narrative. this means that the video in question follows a story or a narrative. in this video it shows the story of two men who are in a relationship and are trying to escape assault and persecution in a Russian country but one of them unfortunately gets captured and attacked.

Narrative - The  narrative of this music video is showing is showing the persecution of two males because they are in a relationship which in the country they live is against the law or the people are using there own actions to get rid of these sorts of people in anyway possible  and punish them for the way they live. one of the partners is searching desperately for his boyfriend because he knows what's going to happen to them but unfortunately he is to late as they have already been attacked by the gangs punishment.

Representation - The representation of this music video is to raise awareness as the artist Hozier is Irish and at the moment this was made and even now marriage equality is a touchy subject. there is no male gaze present in this music video as this would not really make any since to the meaning of the song or the narrative although there is what could be considered female gaze when it is show that the partners who are two men are kissing and could be considered appealing to woman but the two men are not seen as objects as they are part of the narrative and it is there to show how close they are in there relationship. although as there is no male gaze there are no woman featured in the entire video. When looking at this video it shows us what LGBT people have to deal with in other countries that aren't protected by the western world and there laws but this video brings thoughts issues to a western audience as to show them what the rest of the world has to deal with. The two people who are a couple within the video show the love between them and how it can be taken away and damaged so easily because of horrible people in the world that need to be stopped. The beginning of the video shows how happy and normal the couple are and how there lives are happy and they are both having a wonderful time but as soon as the video gets halfway it turns into a horror story with the boyfriend looking for his partner before he gets hurt and it shows his struggle as his partner is attacked and punished for how he lives his life. it is to represent the struggles of LGBT people throughout history and that although things have changed there is still a lot of this hate and anger towards them that happens in the world today.

Conversions - One of the main things you see when looking at this music video is the colour of it. it is only shot in black and white which today would be very odd unless it was trying to show toy something. The reasoning of this is because at add a certain tone to the music video which is very serious and quite dark throughout most of the video with the violence towards the end and the message of the video which talks about how the catholic church view homosexuality in a negative way so it needs to stop. the setting is not really established in the video but we are given a quick glimpse on the television which appears to show russian writing so it could be by assumption say the location is a soviet country for example russia or ukraine. this is important as in this area being LGBT is not a crime but is extremely frowned upon and can come with severe consequences such as attacks and even worse killings as well as government laws that stop them from having many of the rights the rest of the population have. Facial expressions throughout the video show the feelings and opinions of the characters within the narrative such as, the partners who show love and affection to each other with the smiles and happiness when seeing each other as well as the first negative person we see which is a one of the gang member we see later in the video show a face of discussed to the men, This is also shown more when the gang off assailants begin to charge to there victims house as all of there expressions are anger and discussed to show there characters feelings and opinions. there reason the music has been constructed in this was is to give a message, this message was a way the artist Hozier could show his country of Ireland that equality is important for every human being and that marriage equality should be voted yes in Ireland as this music video was made during the time when this was being debated in the country.

Take on me - A-HA

Music video - Take on me

Genre - The genre of this music video of a narrative animation that is similar to the previous video that i have just discussed. this video follows to usual conventions of a typical narrative animation for example having a story that the music video follows quite similar to Take me to church and the animation style .although Take me to church doesn't have this, it is shot in black and white which is unique like the animation in Take on me.

Narrative - The narrative of the song follows a woman reading a comic on her own in a diner. to her surprise a man within the comic winks back at her. then magically the comic comes alive and the man invites her on a trip with him, her we see that they have feelings for each other but it is soon short lived as the diner owner in rage throws away the comic in the bin. as this happens two assailants arrive to try and attack the man and the woman so they make there escape from the comic. sadly the man doesn't make it out but as the woman discovers in her home he manages to come back into the real world to be with his friend and partner.

Representations - in this video because of how old it is there are some representations for example the male gaze that wouldn't be as prevalent in music videos, although some men may find the woman sexy she isn't in any revealing clothing but is shown to be the less dominant figure in the video as the man is saving her from the assailants trying to attack them but during this the woman is never seen as a object or someone that is disposable in any way as she is the main role in this video and it wouldn't really work any other way round. The typical shots that are in this video are the usual conventional shot used in filming such as close ups, mid shots and wide shots in countless parts to create a simple to follow video that wasn't to complicated and showed the narrative as it was shown throughout the video rather that it being edited in a strange way or using very out of the originally shots. The video shows us that that you can find love anywhere in the weird and strangest places in the world but that never makes the love invalid to you or anyone else. In the video she is just on her own having a coffee relaxing in a diner as she reads her comic but out of know where she is sucked into this world where she falls in love and i feels this is to represent the instantness and the surprise of how loving someone can happen at any moment and at anytime. In the end of the video she is extremely sad at the loss of her friend as he sacrificed himself to help her escape as this can show us how much he cared for her and how much he loved her just as much as she loved him. In the end of the video when all seems lost and its the end with his own strength alone he manages to come back and put himself into her world to see her again, this shows us that the love he had for her is so much that he was able to bring himself back and push himself to her world just to be with her and to love her as the love they share in the video is enough to bring him back.

comparison - while the Take me to church video and the Take on me video are similar in the aspects of the relationship between the two characters is the same as this is a narrative that shows there love for each other and there journey but the Take me to church in ends on a very low note as to its comparison that ends on a high with her partner coming back from a assumes horrible end. they both share uniqueness in there style having things such as animation and black and white filters to make them different than other such videos and add a certain creative and unique look to them making both videos iconic and viral.
