unit 26 assignment 3 re-submit

cloverfield

cloverfield was a very different film for the times. the style of a p.o.v captured film from start to finish was not used as much as it is today.
it was also well known for its marketing campaign which is how it got so popular to the audience. For cloverfield and other films of this genre (found footage) the maketing campaign and trailer where made specifically to create mystery towards the film. the way the trailer was created was to appeal to the audience and to make them want to see what this film is all about even if there not into this genre the peoples and the audiences that are interested in jj abrams type films curiosity would be enough for people to come and watch it.

J.J.Abrams is always known for making marketing campaigns very mysterious he never shows any of the information and this makes a lot of the audience curious as to what this film is about this is the case for cloverfield. when the first teaser trailer was released it caused some confusion and thought the film was related to www.ethanhasswasright.com because it had the same conspiracies as the film but it was soon known that this was not the case and a website was set up (www.1-18-08.com)which was the release date of the film and other websites where set up to help.

www.1-18-08.com was set up to help get a little more information about the film. the site had pictures of characters and explosions with times and dates and if you stayed on long enough you could hear the cries of the monster and it made the situation more ire. the website had no more information ant this also caused confusion but made them even more curious about what the film was and the conspiracy behind it. eventually a real website was set up with movie trailers and a text message to get mechanise.

the producers of the films created Myspace profiles for the characters form the films these profiles contained pictures blogs and videos to create more realism for the film and created lots of hype and confusion over the film and made them question over if it was real or not. this is also a good idea to use social media as it is widely used with the demographic audience which the majority would be teens and young adults and using these types of media sites can spread details about the film for example there was fake oil footage of the monster destroying a oil rig and its never shown but it spread all over the internet and media sites such as facebook, twitter,Reddit and other similar sites. they created another site which was the a japanese drink company (http://www.slusho.jp)  this site was Japanese and showed a drink that was featured in the film.it had products and different flavour's to make the website look more real( http://www.slideshare.net/mightykits/a-viral-marketing-campaign-cloverfield)

this type of marketing campaign shows that the film industry has lots of ways to get the the population to watch the films it funds to create. the amount of marketing that was used for this film shows that the film industry will try and push everything they deem profitable but this effects the amount of budget the films have and had have consequences on the quality of the finished film which if the marketing campaign fails then the film is gonna fail even more. the was this campaign was used shows that they rely heavily on the internet as everything that was marketed was on the internet (my space, fake websites, fake news reports videos. the social interaction with the characters worked very well on social media sites as they made the accounts for the characters in the films and this added more interaction for the audience and the film. certain elements of the marketing campaign where viewed to both man and woman but overall movie was targeted for both genders as this film had a sort of neutral tone which incorporated both action and a sort of undertone emotion and a rescue story that had a sad ending which would be targeted to women.

audience reactions

the audience of this film is for teen to middle aged men and also people who are interested in the horror genera but because of how they showed the film before release it would have pulled in a wide audience because people where curious on what this movie was about.

the audiences of this film would primarily be for male audience as it has a lot of action and a horror/ science fiction plot but women would also enjoy it but it isn't the demographic for the location the people that would view this film are people who live in very advanced countries where watching a movie at the cinema especially a hollywood movie is the norm and most of these people would be working class people sort of the majority of population in most countries .

a lot of the people on the internet very much enjoyed cloverfield ideas on marketing as it was fun to try to find hidden things to do with the film such as (the my space profiles) and to get that information and hype around to as many people as possible as that the audience was doing most of the films advertisement for them and it created a more interesting marketing campaign for the audience to get involved with and this is the reason the campaign was so secretive so that when the audience saw theses hidden things they would just asking for more information till the films release and this made wore people want to see what all the film was about . the audience loved the marketing campaign as the movie companies where leaving little teasers that where evidence of new upcoming film

quickly people knew that this film was a found footage film and that can turn allot of people away because well usually thoughts types of films are terrible and although cloverfield wasn't good it wasn't bad either but the shaky cam and mediocre acting did push people away. the characters where unfortunately under developed and this got annoying at parts and also you cared less about them when something happened and the CGI was poorer for 2008 and could have done better but over all this films was a solid found footage film and is on par with the blair witch project (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PC_SgHRdIJM) but in my opinion0 from the demographic i didn't like this film as-well as any found footage film i feel as if it is a poor way to show a story and a poor cop out to get a decent profit it is unique yes but is a poor way to show what i believe could have been a better and decent story for a monster movie.

This is where the audience reactions are more useful as it can tell the audience for future watches on the quality of the film and if it is worth watching and many thought this film was ok as it was breaking records . the marketing campaign was targeted to people who had access to social media and forum sites such as( http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/)  which was the main hub for cloverfiled news as it once crashed the site so this means the marketing campaign was targeted to young adults and people under the age of 50 where people had access to this ability to view parts of the film and tell everyone else about it(http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/cloverfield/news/1704444/box_office_guru_wrapup_cloverfield_crushes_records_at_1/ ) (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=27RFJ46Qb60) and this stood out to the audience who had interest  and caused them to watch it.
